Private Insurance Coverage

Many private health insurance plans do cover abortion, but sometimes differentiate between “elective” abortion and non-elective, with little clarification of those terms until a billing staff person checks with a plan or a claim is submitted. Individuals should contact their insurance plans to learn details regarding what their plan will and will not cover.

Some people will choose not to use private insurance if they are covered on parents’ or a spouse’s insurance plan or if they are part of an employer’s self-insured plan for fear that family or an employer will learn about the abortion. One option in this case is to contact the insurer and request that explanation of benefits documents be sent directly to a particular individual in order to maintain their privacy.
